I support extending the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit (VEETC) beyond 2010.  This program is a money-maker for the Federal government.  For an investment of $5 billion, the ethanol industry generated $8.4 billion.   In addition, if the VEETC expires, nearly 112,000 jobs will be lost.  This is sustainable and renewable home-grown energy.  I believe we need to expand this program by leaps and bounds.   I support H.R. 4940.   There are several ethanol plants in my District and I would like to see more.
I support legislation requiring increasing numbers of Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV).  The Brazil example is one of successfully converting the majority of vehicles to FFV.  New U.S. vehicles should all be required to be FFV.  We need to fully embrace this alternative fuel to escape the madness of Mideast oil politics, to move toward a sustanable and renewable energy future,  and to create jobs here in America.

This is no longer just an energy crisis. It is a National Security issue.  The price of fossil fuels will have a ripple effect and synergistically affect everything in our economy from our pay checks, taxes to our Stock markets.

We have new technologies. Americans have historically been able to solve problems with innovation. Incentives can be offered to come up with both short and long term solutions.

The time has come for Compressed Natural Gas, (CNG), re-fueling station (for-small-profit) before any private (for-big-profit) companies start doing it.  If we, for example, utilized natural gas to power its own fleet, how much could they save in fuel costs annually?  Other utilities do it, why not them?  How much could the City and County fleets save by transitioning over just the police vehicles?  Such fuel savings translates to lower taxes, you know; for the sake of the property owners tax evasion associations and all.  Lowering emissions and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels thus making our Nation more secure in the process is merely a collateral benefit.   There may be Federal grants available for the start-up conversion costs..  Did you know that CNG and Hydrogen can be mixed within the same tank(s) for internal combustion engines?  Hydrogen is renewable and has zero carbon emissions!  There are even stations that can mix the two gases and control the percentages of the product sold.  That could be helpful during spikes in the market cost of each propellant.  Did you know that you could hook up the natural gas line running to your house (clicking on a WG&L gas meter) to a small compressor station about the size of your air conditioner for re-fueling your CNG vehicle at home?  (approx. 5000psi is required)
There are CNG conversion kits to retro-fit almost every make and model vehicle.  The conversion kits are regulated by the EPA.  The local factory dealerships could increase sales in their garages for installations not to mention smaller garages and auto parts suppliers in the area of the re-fueling station.
In Utah, CNG sells for about .93/gal.  The fuel mileage is nearly identical to gasoline, just slightly less.
